Query

How long is too long to go without speaking to someone you would refer to as a friend?

As far as I'm concerned, it's never too long. Sometimes people drift out of your life and there is no good explanation for it. But I would welcome them back in a heartbeat when they finally did decide to return.

Apparently, some people don't feel the same way.

To me, it depends how reciprocal the relationship is. If the relationship drifted apart on account of both parties, and one party drops in to say hello, I would imagine the other party would be happy for the visit. On the other hand, if one party was the initiator and the other party hardly ever reciprocated and then randomly decided to show up one day after blowing off for months or years, I'd probably be less inclined to care.

So examine your relationship and ask yourself whether there was reciprocity, and if not, who gave too much?

Like sra was saying... depends on if one friend was trying and the other wasn't, or if it was a mutual drift-apart.
I've gone years without talking to friends. Sadly. I don't even know how it happens. The funny thing is, when I think about my list of friends, they are still on it.
People get busy, people move on. If you happen to come full circle and get them back in your life, then you're a lucky person.
So yeah, that's my view on it.
